Commodity Overview

Taro root is a brown, barrel-shaped, shaggy tuber that has a flesh color varying from white to beige to light gray. The flavor and texture are similar to a potato and chestnut combination. It must be cooked; it is toxic if eaten raw. Once cooked, the vegetable can be used in soups, cakes or smoothies. It is available year-round from Hawaii and China.
