Two types are sold commercially. Both have thin, smooth red-orange skin and four prominent, sometimes papery, leaves. Persimmons are also called date plums. The hachiya type is creamy and sweet with small, black edible seeds. The fuyu type is tomato shaped, with a sweet, mildly spicy flavor. It has an edible peel and large, brown seeds that are inedible. The fruit complements both sweet and savory flavors; it goes well with baking spices like cinnamon and all spice and can be used in baked goods like cakes or breads or with various cheeses and nuts. Both varieties are available September to December from California.
