This unusual fruit is reddish-brown with a thick, very hard rind. It is about the size of a mandarin orange, and the interior is similar to a segmented orange. The juicy flesh has a flavor of peach and pineapple. The pulp is white and juicy with a sweet-tart flavor and is sectioned into five or six segments. The fruit blends well with other tropical flavors and is often used in desserts, baked goods, or juice. Mangosteen has a 16% sugar content. It is available year-round from Jamaica and Colombia and seasonally from Florida and Pacific Rim markets.
