Black Sapote

Black Sapote

Commodity Overview

With an outer appearance like a fat, olive-colored tomato, the black sapote has a fibrous, soft, fudge-like flesh that can be used as a chocolate substitute. It is a relative of the persimmon and is also called the chocolate pudding persimmon. It is often made into desserts including cakes, mousse or shakes/smoothies. When frozen and sliced, the fruit tastes like a chocolate ice cream bar. Available from Florida but native to Mexico and Central America, black sapote is available from August to March.
