Barbados cherries are soft, juicy, thin-skinned fruit that are more like berries — because of their edible seeds — than cherries. Both skin and flesh are smooth; they are crimson on the outside when mature with orange-yellow, sweet flesh. They are very high in vitamin C, and because of that, and the fact that they bruise easily, they are often juiced. They're also referred to as Puerto Rican cherries or acerola. Barbados cherries are available in varying quantities from April to November from Florida and other tropical regions, with peak season in the summer months.
