Whole Foods' lower prices boost foot traffic

Whole Foods’ lower prices boost foot traffic

Anecdotal evidence shows lower prices at Whole Foods has brought in more curious customers after the Amazon purchase became official, and a Bloomberg.com story puts some numbers to this feeling.

The story says customer traffic rose 25% after the takeover.

“That’s the finding of Foursquare Labs Inc., which compiled location information during the first two days after Amazon completed its acquisition of the grocer. The data, culled from shoppers’ mobile devices, was compared with the same period a week earlier.”

Bloomberg quoted retail analysts saying the boost is no surprise, but the challenge will be to retain those new and returning customers with high quality and low prices.

Produce Retailer’s Pamela Riemenschneider price checks on Austin, Texas, Whole Foods showed the following low prices the weekend of Sept. 9-10:

  • $4.99 seedless watermelon
  • $1.49/lb. broccoli crowns
  • 4/$1 sweet corn
  • $1.99/lb. organic pears

She showed on Instagram that the broccoli display was so popular, it was sold out by Sunday.
