What's On Ad — Cherries, stone fruit and organic strawberries

Cherries again led the list of most-promoted produce items, with more than 19,000 stores featuring them the week ended July 19.

The weighted average price for the fruit was $2.60, compared to $2.44 for the same week in 2018, when about 16,000 stores had cherries on ad, according to the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service.

Here's the regional breakdown of cherry promotions last week:

  • Southeast — 5,476 stores — $2.92
  • Midwest — 3,665 stores — $2.23
  • Northeast — 3,322 stores — $2.70
  • Southwest — 2,980 stores — $2.47
  • South Central — 2,794 stores — $2.29
  • Northwest — 812 stores — $3.03

In addition to cherries, yellow-flesh peaches were on ad at 12,696 stores, yellow-flesh nectarines at 11,047 stores, cantaloupes at 10,831 stores, and red seedless grapes at 9,455 stores.

On the organic side, strawberries dominated, with 5,599 stores promoting them at a weighted average price of $3.17.

The next most popular organic items on ad were red seedless and white seedless grapes, with 4,074 stores promoting them at $2.79. Many more stores promoted the fruit this year versus the same time last year.

In 2018, red seedless grapes were on ad at 1,942 stores, while white seedless grapes were on ad at 1,416 stores. Their prices last year were $3.15 and $3.19, respectively.
