Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis Markets did $888 million in sales for the second quarter of 2019, an increase of 1.9% from the same period in 2018.
The company excluded from its comparable store sales total about $9.7 million that resulted from Easter falling in the second quarter this year instead of the first quarter, according to a news release. Net income for the period was $20.5 million, up 7.2% from the same time in 2018.
Weis Markets attributes the sales growth to the expansion of Weis 2 Go online ordering and to the first-quarter launch of the Low, Low Price program. Weis 2 Go includes pickup and delivery options, and the Low, Low Price program discounted 7,000 private-brand items.
Gross profits rates were affected during the quarter by declining retails and costs in fuel, produce and dairy, per the release. Pharmacy gross profits also suffered.
“Despite this margin pressure, the company’s net income benefited from improving operational efficiencies at store level,” Weis Markets wrote in the release.
