Grand Rapids, Mich.-based SpartanNash has opened a new distribution center in Fargo, N.D., dedicated to fresh produce and floral.

The $10 million facility is 80,000 square feet and has capacity for 1,600 items, including 300 organic items, according to a news release.

“SpartanNash is committed to delivering best-in-class products throughout our supply chain, and today, that commitment now includes fresher-than-ever produce and floral options for customers serviced out of the state-of-the-art Fargo Produce Distribution Center,” Walt Lentz, president of food distribution, said in the release.

The center includes avocado and banana ripening rooms, quality control associates, a banana ripening lead, and three temperature zones. Along with mainstay items, the facility will carry an expanded fresh-cut line, specialty and tropical produce, and a variety of fresh juices, beverages, dressings, snacks and nuts, according to the release.

The Fargo center will serve its own retail stores and its independent retail customers in surrounding states.

SpartanNash took sustainability into account when drawing up its plans for the facility. The Fargo center has “energy-efficient LED green illumination technology to reduce heat, environmentally sustainable refrigeration and non-CO2 emitting industrial warehouse equipment,” per the release.
