Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops Friendly Markets has recognized 11 people as its 2019 Produce Managers of the Year.
Criteria for selection include sales growth, department condition, associate development, merchandising, customer interaction, profitability and shrink, according to a news release.
“The ability to creatively merchandise the product, interact with the customers and oversee the growth of not only the product but the people within the department is paramount,” Jeff Cady, director of produce and floral for Tops, said in the release. “Produce is a vital part of our day-to-day business and being able to undertake this and manage it successfully is something we truly appreciate and want to recognize in these individuals.”
Each Tops region was asked to submit nominees for the awards, and those submissions were then reviewed by Cady and regional vice presidents John McCaffrey and Mike Patti.
The 2019 Produce Managers of the Year for Tops are:

- Ed McIssac, Produce Manager, 108 Orchard Park, N.Y.
- Mario DeCaro, Produce Manager, Store 239, Buffalo, N.Y.
- Mike Tomczak, Produce Manager, Store 209, Jamestown, N.Y.
- Brian Herby, Produce Manager, Store 207, Tonawanda, N.Y.
- Dan Fisher, Produce Manger, Store 665, Liberty, Pa.
- Eric Darrow, Produce Manager, Store 417, Penfield, N.Y.
- Tim Barnes, Produce Manager, Store 362, Nottingham, N.Y.
- Penny Preston, Produce Manager, Store 707, Saranac Lake, N.Y.
- Sam Platz, Produce Manager, Store 367, Cazenovia, N.Y.
- Tammy Allan, Produce Manager, Store 520, Dansville, N.Y.
McIssac received the additional designation of West Region Produce Manager of the Year, and Manwaring received the award for East Region Produce Manager of the Year.
Manwaring has also been recognized by the United Fresh Produce Association as part of its Retail Produce Manager Awards program.
