Tops Markets produce managers heat up sales with winter contests

Produce managers at Tops Markets stores got creative in their promotion of fruits and vegetables this February as they participated in the chain's Winner Wonderland display contest.

Theme weeks included Chilean Taste of Summer Fruit, Potato Lovers Month, Wonderful Winter Halos and Strawberry Slopes.

“We felt this was a great opportunity to encourage a little healthy competition among our store teams,” Jeff Cady, director of produce and floral for Tops, said in a news release.  “During the winter months especially we know that consumers aren't naturally thinking about fruits and vegetables. This challenge encourages our associates to remind the community of the importance of getting their five recommended daily servings in a fun and engaging way.”

Tops gave store-level prizes as well as team bonus prizes for districts with 100% participation in each weekly event.

The Southern Tier District won the overall event, according to the company.

“Having these contests not only help us differentiate us from our competitors but also help to educate our customers in a fun and engaging way,” Cady said in the release.

Tops is based in Williamsville, N.Y. and operates more than 150 supermarkets.
