Three retailers on Fortune ‘Change the World’ list

Walmart, 99 Cents Only and Kroger have been selected by Fortune as companies “doing well by doing good.”

Kroger came in as No. 6 on the fourth annual Change the World list, the only grocery retailer to make the top 10.

Fortune recognized Kroger and 99 Cents Only in the public health and nutrition impact segment, while Walmart received a nod for its efforts to reduce environmental impact.

Kroger has been working to reduce internal waste and hunger in the communities in which it operates, according to Fortune. The company partnered with Feeding America to provide 325 million meals for people in need in 2017. Its goal is to donate 3 billion meals in 2025.

Fortune praised 99 Cents Only for being a more affordable option for low-income shoppers.

“The sub-dollar chain’s 400 or so stores stock locally grown produce, often the perfectly good but imperfect-looking items that higher-end grocers reject,” Fortune said in its blurb about the company. “Just as crucially, they operate in areas often described as food deserts. It’s a winning strategy for reducing food waste, meeting the needs of underserved customers and doing business.”

Walmart made the list for its Project Gigaton, which aims to help its suppliers to decrease emissions by 1 billion tons by 2030. Fortune also noted the company has been working to cut waste in its grocery business, which is notable because Walmart is the largest grocer in the U.S.
