Citrus continues to be a compelling category for grocery retailers, with both oranges and mandarins ranking in the top 10 fruit by dollar sales for 2018, according to the most recent available year-end report from the United Fresh Produce Association.
Mandarins came in sixth that year — outranked only by apples, grapes, bananas, strawberries and avocados — with about $1.67 billion in dollar sales, up 5.6% from 2017. Oranges brought in about $1.1 billion, up 4.8%. Mandarin volume sales were roughly 1.1 billion pounds, up 5.9% from 2017. Orange volume sales were about 850 million, down 1.7%.
