Smurfit Kappa, a global leader in paper-based packaging solutions, was awarded in the AmeriStar Package Awards Competition, an event that recognizes the most innovative packaging designs of the year in the United States.
The “ThermoBox” solution won in the Food, Refrigerated category. This solution is an alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging. Thermobox has the required thermal properties, is 100% sustainable and easier to recycle, Moreover, it halves the space occupied by traditional packaging, and guarantees the controlled-temperature supply chain for foods and products that require isothermal packaging, such as laboratory equipment, medicines, among others.
In addition Smurfit Kappa was awarded in the Others category for the new corrugated insert developed for Clover Imaging Group (CIG), a customer that uses boxes to ship toner cartridges. The solution requires no glue or tape, is easy to assemble manually, and is 100% recyclable.
Another characteristic of this packaging solution is that the end user can remove the new cartridge from the corrugated cardboard box, place it in their printer, and then return the used cartridge to CIG in the same box. This system reduces waste, and besides being sustainable has also meant financial benefits for Clover Imaging Group
“Our products are the result of our employee’s focus on research and innovation, as they constantly seek new ways to create sustainable packaging solutions. These awards show us that we’re on the right path, and decidedly encourage us to continue working towards creating a better planet” said Eduardo Rubio, CEO of Smurfit Kappa North America.
Both awarded solutions will be exhibited at the Innovation ShowCase in the stand that the Institute of Packaging Professionals will have at PACK EXPO in Las Vegas, as well as on its website and social media.
