Several retailers are featuring walnuts and pears together in their stores for American Heart Month.
Those promotions are part of a broader campaign by the California Walnut Board around the heart-healthy attributes of the nut.
To bring produce into the picture, the board has partnered with Pear Bureau Northwest, according to a news release.
Raley’s locations in Sacramento, Calif., are featuring in promotions a walnut-and-pear salad, with demos, sampling and value-added offers as part of the in-store efforts.
February promotions with walnuts and pears are also happening in produce departments of Price Chopper in Albany, N.Y., and Redner’s Markets in Reading, Pa.
The California Walnut Board also partnered with the California Avocado Commission for a promotion at Mollie Stone’s Markets in the San Francisco Bay area.
The broader promotion of walnuts in conjunction with American Heart Month is in its second year, and the board described its debut as a big hit.
“All of us at California Walnuts were thrilled with the sales increases our retail partners experienced during our 2018 campaign, and we’re even more excited to expand this program to more than 2,300 retail locations this year,” Michelle Connelly, executive director of the California Walnut Board, said in the release. “This year’s retail partners, along with our participating walnut handlers, have worked closely together to share the culinary versatility and heart health benefits of walnuts through impactful, customized programs that fit their specific needs and also speak directly to their customers.”
Retailers participating in the broader walnut promotion include:
- Sacramento market — Safeway, Sprouts Farmers Markets, Raley’s/Bel Air/Nob Hill Foods, Save Mart Supermarkets/FoodMaxx/Lucky and Nugget Markets
- Richmond, Va., market — Harris Teeter, Food Lion and Publix
- Denver market — Safeway and Sprouts Farmers Markets
