Second-quarter sales for Publix totaled $9.3 billion, up 6.8% from the same period in 2018.
Comparable store sales growth was 4.8%, boosted by new supermarket sales and the timing of Easter, which fell in the second quarter this year, adding an estimated $105 million, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
Sales for the six months ended June 29 were $19 billion, up 5.5% from 2018. That increase stemmed from new supermarket sales and a 3.3% jump in comparable store sales, per the filing.
As of June 29, Publix is operating 1,221 locations in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. In the first six months of year, Publix has opened 13 supermarkets, remodeled 78 locations and closed three.
“I’m pleased that our Publix associates delivered good operating results,” Publix CEO Todd Jones said in a news release. “We continue to provide premier service to help offset the challenges in the stock market.”
