Produce Perspective — Apple Season Preview

Produce Perspective — Apple Season Preview

Brianna Shales, communications manager for Wenatchee, Wash.-based Stemilt Growers, visited The Packer's office recently and sat down for an interview about the upcoming apple season.

“It is a bigger crop, and time will tell to see how big ‘big’ is, but we are excited because there’ll be lots of opportunities for promoting apples at retail this fall and winter and spring, so our work’s cut out for us, and the thing I think we’re most excited about at Stemilt is really the variety mix we have going into this season and then the percentage of organics," Shales said.

Thirty percent of Stemilt's apple crop is organic, she noted. The company started harvesting its new Rave apple in late July and planned to begin with galas and SweeTangos this week, with Honeycrisp soon to follow and Cosmic Crisp also coming down the pike.

Shales also provided a stone fruit season update during her visit — check out that interview here.
