Kansas City grocer Price Chopper plans to spend more this year than the previous two years combined on new stores and remodels.

The company intends to invest $54 million, bringing its total over three years to more than $104 million, according to a news release.

“It’s important for us to reinvest into the communities we serve,” Brian Haaraoja, president and CEO of Price Chopper Enterprises, said in the release. “We know the impact of these investments will spur growth in new areas, while also adding to the job force.”

Expanding fresh departments — including produce — will be the focus of the remodels and new stores, per the release.

Projects slated for 2020 include new stores in Gardner, Kan., and Smithville, Mo., and remodels in Overland Park, Kan., Leavenworth, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo.

Price Chopper has 51 stores in the Kansas City area, locally owned by the Ball, Cosentino, McKeever and Queen families.
