The first commercial acreage in Texas was established in the late 1800s, and focused primarily on oranges. In the early 20th century growers found a sweet spot in grapefruit. Ruby Red was discovered in 1929 and quickly became the state's signature variety. It received the first patent for grapefruit in 1934.
