Organic produce sales continue to climb

Sales of organic fruit, vegetables and herbs and spices totaled $1.4 billion in the second quarter of 2018, up 4.7%.

The organic vegetable category led the way with $787 million in sales, up 4.4%, according to the latest FreshFacts on Retail report from the United Fresh Produce Association.

Organic fruit contributed another $524 million in sales, up 1.2%.

Organics herbs and spices saw 13.5% dollar growth to $80 million.

As far as individual items, pre-packaged salads were the winner by a large margin with $293 million in sales, up 5.9%.

Next were apples at $98 million, up 8.1%. Strawberries came in third at $86 million, down 12.7%.

“Strong organic growth for staple commodities such as apples and bananas help to lift the entire category performance,” United Fresh wrote in the report.

“Yet opportunity exists for those commodities that are struggling in organic sales or have a lower contribution from organic items, to provide the consumer with what they are expecting from this premium product set.”
