Need to move asparagus? Sales tips here

For retailers looking to sell more asparagus, the Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association recommends value-added options, cross-promotion and big displays.

“We’ve streamlined our Category Statistics and Trends Plan this year to a 6-page chart and bullet point summary focusing on trends, demographics and marketing tips,” Priscilla Lleras-Bush, coordinator of the association (PAIA), said in a news release.

PAIA suggests pairing asparagus in displays with steaks and seafood to inspire meal ideas for shoppers. It also notes that using color can be a helpful sales strategy, as Peruvian asparagus comes in green, purple and white.

Given the emphasis on convenience, value-added and packaged options are important, according to the PAIA plan document. Retailers can also emphasize easy preparation options for asparagus.

The association also urged promotion of health benefits from the vegetable, including potassium, vitamins A and C, low fat and no cholesterol.

PAIA also made note of statistics from The Packer’s Fresh Trends consumer research, including that asparagus was the No. 2 produce item that consumers said they bought in the last 12 months that they had not bought previously.
