Nature Fresh Farms picks up exclusive tangy, purple tomato

Leamington, Ontario-based greenhouse grower Nature Fresh Farms is breaking out of the cherry-red mold this November, launching a proprietary, violet-hued tomato variety called Yoom alongside its greenhouse-grown produce offerings.

“The Yoom is the perfect complement to our existing tomato offerings,” Matt Quiring, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Nature Fresh Farms, said in a news release. “It's full and complex flavor, matched with its small size, crisp texture and juicy interior provide a well-rounded tomato that will appeal to many consumers.”

The Yoom tomato was not developed with any bioengineering or gene splicing to obtain its unique qualities. Instead, the cocktail tomato was developed naturally through a Syngenta-led plant breeding program. Tomato researchers developed a deep purple, two-bite tomato with a distinctive sweet-sour flavor with hints of tang and savory umami.

Presented in 2019 at Fruit Logistica, Yoom is now grown and marketed across Europe, the U.K., Australia and North America.

“The Yoom is a great tomato to add a surprise element to any dish,” Quiring said in the release. In addition to its unexpected flavor and color, the proprietary tomato boasts high levels of antioxidants, anthocyanin and lycopene – which gives the Yoom its unmistakable deep purple tint – along with vitamins A and C, magnesium and potassium.
