Turns out, avocados are not just a trending fruit enjoying more mainstream favor the last few years.

The rich, creamy and mild fruit is also climate friendly.

Avocados earned this designation from Rockville, Md.-based Mom’s Organic Market, which launched its inaugural Climate-Friendly Foods initiative on July 28, according to a news release.

This campaign aims to promote foods that have a minimal carbon emission footprint during the growth cycle.

By focusing on foods that have lower greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water and preserve land, Mom’s is taking steps to combat climate change and foster biodiversity through awareness.

“Our goal with this campaign is to get people thinking about how their food choices can affect the environment. With signage throughout the store, we can provide helpful information to customers that want low-carbon footprint items within different food groups,” Mom’s founder and CEO Scott Nash said in the release.

All store locations will highlight these foods with a “Low-Carbon” seal within different food groups.

The carbon footprint of food is determined by several factors, including agricultural practices, land use, energy inputs and processing. By giving preference to low-carbon footprint foods, consumers can make conscious food choices that combat climate change.

Through this campaign, Mom’s is encouraging shoppers to embrace organic options and explore alternative food choices to minimize their carbon footprint and make a positive impact on the planet.
