Yes, fresh produce IS part of Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer’s new “Shop & Scan” initiative, and the company is upgrading its random weight scales to accommodate it.
The company unveiled the initiative April 16, promising customers a “streamlined shopping checkout,” using their mobile devices to scan bar codes and bag groceries as they shop.
“Shop & Scan will make the Meijer experience dramatically faster and more convenient for our customers,” said Terry Ledbetter, chief information officer for Meijer, in a news release. “This technology joins our curbside pickup and home delivery programs to provide yet another option for Meijer customers to personalize their shopping experience.”
Frank Guglielmi, senior director of communications for Meijer, confirmed in an email the company is adding printable scale technology to support the Shop & Scan roll-out. He said roll-out should be completed by the summer.
Using the Shop & Scan technology, customers complete their shop by scanning their phones at the self-checkout lane and pay. The service has been in pilot testing since November. The company expects all 235 stores to offer it by the end of the summer.
