Meijer plans to test the Flashfood app, which lets shoppers purchase food nearing its best-by date at lower prices, in several metro Detroit locations.
Produce, meat, seafood, deli and bakery products are available through the app at half price, according to a news release. Participating stores are in Brighton, Waterford, Commerce and Howell. Shoppers pay for the items on the app and then go into the store to confirm the order with customer service and pick up their products.
“Food is at the core of what we do, and we are constantly looking at ways to minimize in-store waste because it’s the right thing to do for our communities and our customers,” Don Sanderson, group vice president of fresh, said in the release. “We are excited to work with Flashfood and learn how much food can be spared from landfills.”
The retailer has been looking to reduce waste in a number of ways. Along with donating 10.6 million pounds of food to local food banks in 2018 through its Food Rescue program, Meijer sends waste for animal feed, for compost and for anaerobic digestion, per the release.
Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer operates more than 245 locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
“Reducing food waste is an important goal at Meijer,” Erik Petrovskis, director of environmental compliance and sustainability, said in the release. “There are creative solutions throughout a food’s life cycle that can reduce landfill use and production of greenhouse gases, and I’m pleased we’re looking at another in-store option that benefits our customers.”
