Richmond, Va.-based Globalmex International’s Magic Sun, the brand for conventional and organic tomatoes, has broadened its greenhouse product line by adding bell peppers.
Grown at high elevations in the central Mexican region of Zacatecas, these orange, red and yellow peppers will create a program for Magic Sun to have sustainable volumes year-round, according to a news release.
All three colors of peppers will be available for shipping by mid-July.
The move into bell peppers is a natural extension of the company’s original conventional and organic tomato programs, Alejandro Santander, vice president of sales and operations, said in the release.
“The collective Magic Sun team has over 20 years of experience in the ag business. Our growers excel in leveraging the region’s excellent growing conditions, which offer favorable weather and natural sunlight year-round,” he said in the release.
The new technologies for growing tomatoes in the greenhouses can be applied to a very similar growing environment for peppers.
“We have continuously invested in and expanded our greenhouse operations to include multiple varieties,” Santander said in the release.
Market data shows peppers are increasing in popularity and moving into the top five of the most popular purchased vegetable items in U.S. produce departments, Tony Otto, Magic Sun sales manager, said in the release
“Retailers are looking to build on that momentum,” Otto said.
With year-round production of peppers, Magic Sun will have consistent volume and a wide variety of packs — bulk No. 11 boxes and 2, 3, 4 and 6-unit poly bags — to work with retailers on seasonal plans and promotions.
