This mushroom display from the 1960s might not fly in your store today – I’m guessing the nearly-naked lady standing on a scale would get some complaints – but the setup increased sales 69% in its day, according to the 1968 edition of The Packer’s Ideas in Merchandising.
One element that still makes a ton of sense is the featuring of recipes cards to drive incremental sales. Highlighting the versatility of the product is also great, and so is playing up the health value – although, as we discussed in our last issue, an emphasis on diet and weight is not what people want to hear these days. Encouraging overall wellness and highlighting specific benefits is the way to go.
