Dwayne Campbell from West Des Moines, Iowa-based Hy-Vee won the Best Bagger Championship and $10,000 at the NGA Show Feb. 25.
“Baggers or courtesy clerks are an essential part of a positive customer experience,” Peter Larkin, president and CEO of the National Grocers Association, said in a news release.
Campbell said he plans to use the money to take his family on vacation.
More than 20 baggers competed at the high-energy event, which was emceed by former NFL player and American Ninja Warrior cohost Akbar Gbajabiamila.
Gbajabiamila did interviews with each of the contestants between rounds as the bagging tables were reset, and family members and coworkers cheered and held up signs of encouragement, glow sticks and even giant photos of the faces of their contestant as loud music played.
Baggers are judged on speed, technique and weight distribution along with style, attitude and appearance, per the release.
