HelloFresh touts waste reduction efforts

Meal kit company HelloFresh has decreased its waste and given more food to those in need thanks to its partnership with Spoiler Alert, a company that helps businesses manage their unsold inventory.

Since the organizations began working together in July, landfill-bound waste from HelloFresh has dropped 65%, and the percentage of leftover food donated has jumped from 33% to 61%, according to a news release.

Along with allowing HelloFresh to better use what does not sell, Spoiler Alert gives the company information on how to adjust its purchasing.

“At Spoiler Alert, we recognize the massive problem that food waste poses to businesses and our planet,” co-founder and chief product officer Emily Malina. “We’re using our unique platform and data analysis to change the status quo. With HelloFresh, the food recovery numbers speak for themselves.”

Uwe Voss, managing director and chief operations officer for HelloFresh U.S., said reducing food waste is something that company has always prioritized, with part of the appeal of meal kits being that ingredients are made available in exactly the quantities required.

“Working with Spoiler Alert has enabled us to double down on our mission to operate a sustainable business that generates great value for our customers and our community,” Voss said.
