With all the buzz around cara caras, blood oranges, branded mandarins and specialty varieties, you could forgive the average shopper for overlooking the humble grapefruit – but due in large part to the vitamin C craze that has accompanied the pandemic, grapefruit had a banner sales year in 2020.
From 2018 to 2019, sales fell 3.6%, according to Nielsen, but from 2019 to 2020, sales increased 18.2%. Because there is already a strong association between grapefruit and immunity, it just makes sense to call out the item's many health-promoting attributes on point-of-sale material and other marketing.
