Sixty percent of consumers polled by The Packer’s Fresh Trends 2024 survey reported fresh onion purchases in the past year.
According to Fresh Trends 2024 data, onion purchases increase as household income increases, ranging from 44% for those earning $25,000 or less annually to 69% for those earning more than $100,000 a year.
Based on household size, Fresh Trends data show self-reported onion purchases are lowest for those with one dependent child (54%) and highest for those with three or more dependet children (61%). Sixty-three percent of consumers with no kids reported onion purchases in the past year.
Fresh Trends 2024 survey data show that reported onion purchases increase with age, from 47% for 18-29-year-olds to 70% for 50-59-year-olds, then falling slightly to 69% for consumers aged 60 and older.
For consumers who reported onion purchases in the past year in Fresh Trends 2024, 71% said they purchased conventional onions, 10% said they purchased organic onions, 16% indicated they purchased both organic and conventional onions and 3% of consumers were not sure what type of onions they purchased.
