Eighty-three percent of The Packer's Fresh Trends respondents said they bought apples in the past 12 months. While red delicious continues to dominate variety preference, Honeycrisp moved up to No. 3 on the list, after a three-way tie for second between gala, granny smith and fuji.
Honeycrisp apples are closer to year-round promotions than ever before, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Retail Report. Only one week out of the past 52 ending Nov. 13 did not have any stores with Honeycrisp apples on ad.
Average advertised price peaked at $3.40 in February, and the number of stores with Honeycrisp on ad peaked at 13,707 in mid-October.
