FRESH TRENDS FOCUS: Brussels sprouts

FRESH TRENDS FOCUS: Brussels sprouts

by Pamela Riemenschneider, Dec 21, 2016

Despite what your childhood told you, Brussels sprouts are trending.

The cruciferous vegetable was purchased by 22% of The Packer's Fresh Trends 2016 respondents. Its “superfood” status has it shredded into salad blends and value-added options.

Income was a factor in Brussels sprouts purchase, with those in the highest income bracket, making $100k+ per year twice as likely as those in the lowest income group, $25k and below, to purchase.

Consumers in the West also were a few percentage points more likely to purchase, at 25%, compared to the national average.

Brussels sprouts promotions peak just before major “cooking” holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Retail Report.
