Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion plans to spend $168 million in improvements in the greater Norfolk, Va., market in 2018.

The company said in a news release the investments will go toward store remodels, lower prices, expanded assortment – including more organic and value-added produce -- employee promotions and 5,000 new hires.

“Food Lion has been nourishing our neighbors in the greater Norfolk market for nearly 40 years, and we are excited to bring our newest shopping experience to this community, said Meg Ham, Food Lion president, in a news release. “With every change, we have kept our customers at the forefront because we want to ensure they can easily find fresh, quality products to nourish their families at affordable prices every day, delivered with caring, friendly service every time they shop.”

Stores are expected to remain open during normal hours through the process.

Twelve of the 105 remodeled stores also will get a new walk-in “garden cooler” designed to keep produce fresher longer.

To date, Food Lion has remodeled more than half of its 1,000 stores across 10 states, as part of the “Easy, Fresh and Affordable…You Can Count on Food Lion Every Day!” strategy.
