Greensboro, N.C.-based The Fresh Market has hired Dan Portnoy as its chief merchandising officer.
Portnoy, whose previous roles include president and CEO for Kings Super Markets/Balducci’s Markets and chief merchandising and marketing officer for Winn-Dixie Stores, will report to The Fresh Market president and CEO Larry Appel. The Fresh Market’s merchandising directors and group vice president of merchandise operations Lance Twitty will report to Portnoy.
Portnoy’s background also includes leadership roles with beverage company Cott Corp. and private brand development company Daymon Worldwide, according to a news release.
“I believe Dan to be one of the brightest and most creative merchants in the industry,” Appel said in the release. “He possesses both a strong understanding of our specialty brand and the business acumen to deliver results. With Dan at the helm of our merchandising team, I am confident that we will achieve our vision of being the premier fresh-focused specialty food retailer.”
Portnoy has more than 35 years of experience in food retail merchandising and marketing, per the release. He will be relocating from Jacksonville, Fla., to Greensboro for his new role.
