Country Fresh expands fresh-cut fruit recall at Walmart stores

Country Fresh, The Woodlands, Texas, has extended a fresh-cut watermelon recall to include items with grapes and fresh-cut apples, mangoes, pineapples and cantaloupe that were distributed to Walmart stores in nine states.

The company issued the recall after the Food and Drug administration found Listeria Monocytogenes on “equipment used in an area near where these products are packed” during a recent inspection, according to the recall notice.

The first recall was on Oct. 1 and Country Fresh expanded it on Oct. 3. Walmart and RaceTrac are the only companies who received the products.

The company hasn’t received reports of any illnesses to date, according to the notice, posted by Country Fresh on the Food and Drug Administration website.

The most recent recall includes 22 items containing different fresh-cut fruit, some which are medleys and others that contain just one type of fruit. Best-if-used-by dates range from Oct. 3-11, according to the notice.

The products were sent Walmart distribution centers and then to stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

A full list of the recalled items are on the FDA’s website.

“Country Fresh takes food safety matters very seriously, stringently follows all mandated regulations and implements preventive measures designed to minimize potential risks,” according to the company. “Country Fresh is working in close coordination with FDA in its continuing investigation to resolve the matter promptly and deeply regrets the inconvenience to our consumers and customers.”
