Central Market, Wegmans, Heinen’s, Gelson’s, Trader Joe’s and Market Basket scored highest in customer satisfaction in the latest ranking of grocery stores by Consumer Reports.

The organization rated 96 retailers based on a survey of more than 75,000 Consumer Reports members, who each rated one or two stores they frequent, according to CR.

CR reported that consumers said price was their top reason for shopping at a particular store, but produce quality and variety of goods were the next most important factors.

The following stores received the highest mark — “excellent” — for produce quality.

  • Central Market
  • Wegmans
  • Heinen’s
  • Gelson’s
  • New Seasons Market
  • Lunds & Byerlys
  • Fresh Thyme Farmers Market

These stores were also deemed “excellent” for their produce variety.

  • Central Market
  • Wegmans
  • Heinen’s
  • Gelson’s
  • New Seasons Market

Interestingly, many of the same stores that rated high overall and that were credited with having top-tier produce offerings also excelled in helpfulness/attentiveness of employees.

Chains that scored as high as possible in both produce and customer service include Central Market, Wegmans, Heinen’s, Gelson’s, New Seasons Market and Lunds & Byerlys.
