BrightFarms, Irvington, N.Y., was named in Fast Company magazine’s list, World Changing Ideas.

The company’s proprietary artificial intelligence technology, dubbed BrightOS, received an honorable mention in the artificial intelligence and data category, according to a news release.

BrightFarms facilities are wired with thousands of sensors, including a network of robotic cameras that move about the plants and monitor their progress from seed to harvest.

This network of sensors produces millions of data points that are fed to BrightOS.

It is the “brain” that connects BrightFarms’ growing network of indoor farms, according to the release.

There have been more advancements this year as well:

  • Earlier in May, BrightFarms opened its fifth facility, a Hendersonville, N.C., greenhouse to distribute more than 2 million pounds of lettuce in the region;
  • Another facility is set to open in 2021, in New England; and
  • In 2021, BrightFarms will double in size and production and be available in more than 3,500 stories.
