Steve Mayer was promoted to president of Bashas’ Operating Cos., announced June 14, at a grand opening ceremony that also celebrated Bashas’ new headquarters in Chandler, Ariz.

In his new role, Mayer will lead the Bashas’ organization in Arizona and New Mexico, including all store and distribution center operations, as well as sales and merchandising, according to a letter from Keith Knopf, president and CEO of The Raley’s Cos.

Mayer will continue to report to Knopf and serve on the enterprise leadership team.

Joining Bashas’ leadership team in 2020, Mayer most recently served as Bashas’ chief operating officer, where he has proven to be a capable and strategic leader, Knopf said.

“Under his leadership and direction, Bashas’ continues to build on a strong financial trend and brand evolution while preserving its proud legacy,” Knopf said in the letter. “The Bashas’ operating company, including Bashas’, Bashas’ Diné, Food City, and AJ’s stores are thriving. We are fortunate to have such a proven and dedicated leader.”

Mayer’s executive team for Bashas’ includes Johnny Basha, Michael Basha, Ralph Woodward, Ashley Shick and Sabrina Dominquez, along with the The Raley’s Cos. shared services leaders, all of whom will work together, alongside all team members.

The new Bashas’ corporate office is named a support center because of the support it lends to its retail stores, which in turn supports customers, according to a news release. This new location will serve as a hub for Bashas’, Food City, AJ’s Fine Foods, Eddie’s Country Store and Bashas’ Diné grocery stores across Arizona and New Mexico.

It is the grocer’s first corporate office move in 90 years.

Bashas’ supermarkets began in 1932, when brothers Ike and Eddie Basha Sr. opened the first Bashas’-branded grocery store 5 miles south of Chandler, Ariz. West Sacramento, Calif.-based Raley’s Holding Co. signed a definitive agreement to acquire Chandler-based Bashas’ Family of Stores.

The Raley’s Cos. is a private, family-owned and purpose-driven retail company founded in 1935, with more than 235 locations today across four states and four tribal nations under eight  banners: Raley’s, Bel Air, Nob Hill Foods, Raley’s O-N-E Market, Bashas’, Food City, AJ’s Fine Foods and Bashas’ Diné Market. Also, Raley's Cos. bridges the divide between the physical and digital retail experiences through the operation of Apium Logistics, Fieldera and FieldTRUE.
