Apples are the top-selling produce category during the back to school season, according to the latest Nielsen FreshFacts analysis.
“With the rise of online lunchbox hacks to help parents pack creative and healthy lunches, it's easy to forget that many simple foods, like snacking produce, come in their own packages and require little more prep than a quick rinse in the sink,” the report said.
Dollar sales for apples during the five weeks ending Sept. 10, 2016 were $243.5 million, and grew 9% versus a year prior. Fresh-cut fruit came in No. 2, with $204.9 million in sales and 6.3% growth, followed by strawberries, with $202.8 million in sales and 15.3% growth versus a year ago.
Mangoes, though, are showing exceptional growth during this period. While total dollar sales were less than a tenth of the apple category at $22.5 million, dollar growth versus the previous year was 33.7% and volume growth was 73.6%.
