As if a $1.6 billion remodel and expansion plan wasn’t enough, Aldi says it is upping the ante on new stores and renovations planned in the next five years to $5 billion total, 1,300 store remodels and a total footprint of 2,500 stores in the U.S.
The Batavia, Ill.-based arm of the German discount chain currently operates about 1,600 stores in 35 states. With the growth plans announced, the company aims to be the third largest grocery chain by store count in the U.S.
“We pioneered a grocery model built around value, convenience, quality and selection and now Aldi is one of America’s favorite and fastest growing retailers,” said Jason Hart, CEO, in a news release. “We’re growing at a time when other retailers are struggling. We are giving our customers what they want, which is more organic produce, antibiotic-free meats and fresh healthier options across the store, all at unmatched prices up to 50% lower than traditional grocery stores.”
In February, Aldi pledged $1.3 billion to remodel 1,300 existing stores and build another 650 locations. The company says the remodels were to accommodate expanded fresh food offerings, including organic and conventional produce.
