Aldi plans to ramp up fresh offerings

Aldi has committed to increasing its fresh food selection by 40% through 2019, and more fresh produce is part of the plan.

Stores will carry an expanded produce selection that includes fresh-cut items like vegetable noodles and sliced mango, pineapple and watermelon, according to a news release. The company also plans to have more organic fruits and vegetables and produce snack packs.

Aldi will offer more products tailored to easier meal preparation, like marinated chicken breasts, and will carry more vegan and vegetarian options.

Convenience-centric additions will include single-service guacamole and hummus and beverages like strawberry kefir and kombucha.

“The continued success of our store expansion and remodel initiatives has given us the opportunity to carefully select and introduce new products that satisfy our customers’ increasing preferences for fresh items, including organic meats, salad bowls, sliced fruits and gourmet cheeses,” Jason Hart, CEO of ALDI U.S., said in the release. “We know people lead busy lives, so we’re making it even easier for them to purchase everything on their shopping list at Aldi while still saving money.”

Aldi is in the midst of a $5 billion revamp, aiming to remodel many of its stores and grow its overall store count to 2,500 by the end of 2022.

The company is now past the halfway point of its remodel investment, with new store layouts featuring more refrigeration space for fresh products, per the release.
