With Cinco de Mayo falling during peak season for California avocados, the Mexican food-focused celebration is the perfect time for retailers to promote the green fruit from the Golden State.
To learn top tips for merchandising and displays that drive Cinco de Mayo avocado sales, The Packer turned to the experts at the California Avocado Commission.
Here’s what CAC Vice President of Marketing Terry Splane recommends:
1. Create large displays of California avocados cross-merchandised with colorful, complementary produce items — especially those used in guacamole recipes such as chilies, tomatoes, onions, limes and lemons.
2. Merchandise multiple avocado sizes, both conventional and organic. Shoppers need multiple avocados to make guacamole and other dips for Cinco de Mayo celebrations, so including bagged avocados on racks or in bins helps increase the basket ring, especially with complementary produce added.
3. Feature pricing on bagged California avocados leading up to Cinco de Mayo to encourage visits to the produce section.
4. Place additional displays of California avocados adjacent to the produce department, near store entrances or near checkout and include non-produce Cinco de Mayo party items like tortilla chips and beer in the same display with fun signage.
