Tamarillo

Tamarillo

Tamarillo

Commodity Overview

This “tree tomato” comes in three varieties. Red is tart and has reddish-golden flesh, while gold and amber are mildly tart with golden flesh. The flesh is bitter, almost meaty, tasting more like tomatoes than plums, bananas or apples. Consumers should peel any variety (blanch in hot water) before eating. Most often the fruit is used in sauces, chutneys, salsas or in cakes or ice creams. Gold tamarillos are available from fall into winter. Red tamarillos are available year-round.
