Walmart quietly added meal kits to online grocery

Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart Inc. is the latest major retailer to start offering meal kits in collaboration with existing brands.

Over the weekend, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Takeout Kit and Chicago-based Home Chef appeared on the company's website, according to news reports.

The move follows acquisitions and collaborations like Boise-based Albertsons' purchase of Plated, Amazon's partnership with Marley Spoon and regional retailers Tops Friendly Markets and Gelson's offering Chef'd meal kits.

Kroger, H-E-B, Amazon, Supervalu and a host of other retailers have also started offering own-branded meal kits online and in-store, as well.

I grabbed a screen cap of a listing of one of the Takeout Kits on Walmart's site and noticed something interesting – Walmart is selling the kit for $4.99 cheaper than Amazon in my market, according to the Amazon tracker extension I have installed on Google Chrome.

The extension shows me when Amazon offers a product I'm looking at from another site. Handy tool.

Who do you think will be the next big retailer to announce meal kits?

Or will it be a retailer buying Blue Apron?
