Fred Meyer is promoting low prices. Is Kroger doubling down on price vs. Wal-Mart?

A recent price check performed by Barclays Research found Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is beating Kroger Co. an average of 4% on price, according to a survey of 78 items.

But the one holdout? Fresh. According to the price check, performed in Nashville, Tenn., “fresh” items were 3.7% more expensive at Wal-mart than they were at Kroger.

But don't get too excited about these numbers.

According to an article on Business Insider, Kroger's fresh prices were lower because of “steep discounts” on items like eggs, apples, green grapes, baby carrots, bell peppers and chicken.

With those items excluded, Kroger's “fresh” items cost 15% more than Wal-Mart's.

Done a little price checking of your own lately?

And how does Wal-Mart stack up against Aldi?

And should you care about being the lowest on the block? Hear from Produce Retailer Editorial Director Greg Johnson about that topic in his Viewpoint column.
