As part of its eighth year with the Take a Bite Out of Hunger program, Lubbock, Texas-based The United Family supermarkets donated 40,500 pounds of apples to food banks in Texas and New Mexico.

The company is the oldest retail partner in the program, according to a news release, and has donated more than 400,000 pounds of apples and fed more than 100,000 during its participation.

“As The United Family celebrates the eighth year of partnership, our continued participation in the Take a Bite Out of Hunger program allows a great opportunity each year to actively support our commitment to serve those in need,” Joseph Bunting, produce director for The United Family, said in the release.

“We are proud to stand with these food banks as they seek to eliminate widespread hunger.”

Take a Bite Out of Hunger was created by FirstFruits Marketing of Washington to bring attention to food insecurity in the U.S. and help feed those in need, according to the release.
