TOUR: The Salvation Army’s new nonprofit grocery

by Pamela Riemenschneider, Mar 08, 2018

The Salvation Army just opened its first nonprofit grocery, DMG Foods in Baltimore.

DMG is named after the Salvation Army’s motto, “Doing the Most Good.”

Not only does it have a full produce department, in-house cut meat, and prepared foods, the store also does on-the-job training for grocery employees, according to a walkthrough posted to The Salvation Army USA’s Facebook page.

The Salvation Army plans to open these nonprofit grocery stores in “food deserts”, according to a news release.

“It is believed to be the first grocery store in the nation to combine social service with a traditional grocery shopping experience, and will provide nutritional guidance, shopping education, meal planning and workforce development,” the release said.

The Maryland Food Bank partnered with the Salvation Army to provide some fresh foods, training and demos in-store.
