PULA, Croatia -- It may have been a vacation for me, but that doesn't mean I wasn't store checking. My family and I visited Pula over the July 4 weekend, during a week and a half visit to southern and central Europe.
Pula is a beach town, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. it caters to tourists mostly from Italy, Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom with crystal clear blue water and affordable amenities.
I checked a few different stores and am sharing photos from Plodine, a Croatian chain, and Kaufland, a chain based in Germany.
Prices are in Croatian Kuna. The exchange rate is about 6.5 Kuna per U.S. dollar.
Things that stuck out to me: Apples were in abundance, even though we're in the off season. Idared was a popular variety, as was golden delicious and jonagold. Unlike elsewhere in Europe, I didn't see a lot of packaged apples.
Root vegetables and cabbage were popular, as is expected for this region. There were a lot of rutabagas on displays. Most produce was sold bulk, not packaged, including cherries. You don't often see bulk cherries on display in the U.S. anymore.
Sweet corn is unusual, and a delicacy. I even saw it sold from a street vendor in the touristy areas downtown, both popped and roasted on the cob. The sweet corn I saw on displays at stores was tray packed, and very expensive -- $.50 per ear.
I hope you enjoy the look around!
