Yakima, Wash-based Domex Superfresh Growers released its harvest edition of Orchard Update with Dave Gleason, chief horticulturist.
Gleason says most Washington apple growers are about 50% done with harvest, with great weather, and smaller profile fruit this season.
As a company Domex is making way for new technology and new apple varieties, by pulling out older gala trees to compost, and then plant Cosmic Crisp.
“It’s quite a process,” he says.
The update also features Parker Sherrell, Superfresh Growers’ new pre-production manager, who shared some apple harvest numbers.
Did you know…
- On a peak harvest day, there are about 30,000 pickers
- Who average six 850-pound apple bins per day
- Each bin holds about 2,000 apples
- Which equates to about 360 million apples harvested per day?
That’s a whole lotta apples.
